Graduate film ‘Sculptor’ screening at Canadian festivals

Andreas Fobes’ animated short film ’Sculptor’, made as part of his MA at UWE, has been screened at the Flamingo Film Festival in Florida and Halifax Animation Festival in Nova Scotia, as well as closer to home at the Cube cinema in Bristol.  It is also due to be screened at the Ottawa International Animation festival later this month, which Andreas is very excited to attend.

The film follows a sculptor attempting to create the perfect form. Before creating this solo film, Andreas had little idea of narrative, visuals and sound. It was a spontaneous, improvisatory process,  similar to the sculptor in the film, involving a series of different attempts and refining to create a finished piece that feels right.

‘The thing I like about making animation in this more experimental or improvised way is that it gives you a chance to explore, and solo films can be very interdisciplinary. This was appealing to me as I’d like to go into teaching at some point, and it allows me to experiment and incorporate different styles into the work.’

Andreas’ advice for budding animators is ‘to come into it with whatever skills you have, be it illustration, dance, story writing, photography, and find a way to use these to make the work – there are so many facets to animation and different ways into it.’

He has recently moved back to Prince Edward Island in Canada, which makes it particularly helpful that the film has done so well in Canadian festivals this year, and is working there as a Visual Arts Educator at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. UWE Animation wish him the best of luck with his career and can’t wait to see what he produces next.
