Animation graduate wins award for Best International Student Animation at Manifest : Mafra Animation Festival

Luzie Ilgner’s short film ‘Forget-Me-Not’ won the award just a few months after they graduated from UWE Animation’s BA course, and has been sweeping through multiple festivals in the UK and internationally.

As well as its success at Manifest, the film has so far screened at Weird Market in Valencia, Little Wing Film Festival, the Global University Film Awards, and Women’s Film Festival Demakijaż in Poland.

The film features hybrid animation, combining stop-motion backgrounds with 2D animated characters drawn on top. It tells the story of an old lady living on her own, who waits for her daughter to come over for tea. As the waiting drags on and her loneliness grows, and plants start begin to sprout around her.

Luzie’s hybrid animation journey started when they attended a set building workshop in second year and really enjoyed the hands-on process involved. Fellow students encouraged them to make a film that combined these elements with 2D, and from then on Luzie experimented with putting these forms together.

Luzie is now keen to combine more forms of animation and crafting within their future work, and their main piece of advice for current students is to get involved in the local arts scene in Bristol, and to take advantage of the facilities at Bower Asthon. ‘Work with as many different types of materials and processes as possible; whether it’s printmaking, ceramics, or another craft you’ve never tried before.’

Social media has also been a valuable tool for Luzie in getting their work seen by a wider audience, with some clips of the film garnering over eleven thousand views on instagram. Alongside growing this online platform, Luzie is currently working with filmmaker Helen Iley on an animated sequence in a new live action film ‘The Siren Song’, and interviewing for multiple roles with production companies in Bristol. We wish Luzie all the best with the interviews and can’t wait to see where their career goes next!
