Graduate Career Spotlight: Melody Farr – VFX

Our Programme Support Assistant for Animation, Nia, recently caught up with Melody Farr, to find out what she has been working on since graduating from MA Animation in 2022. The image above is from Drain the Oceans, a show she is currently working on for National Geographic, from the episode The Secrets of Pompeii’s Dead.

Hi Melody! How would you describe your career so far in animation?

I’ve been working in television, mostly in post production. I’ve specialised in VFX, doing footage tracking and cleanup, as well as some motion graphics. 

What do you love about animation?

There’s limitless possibilities in animation. I love that if you imagine it you can create it, it doesn’t have to adhere to the rules of reality. For me, it’s more interesting to watch.

What are you working on at the moment?  

I’m currently working part time as a VFX instructor at AFA Hub, as well as doing some freelance work in visual effects and post production on a documentary series for National Geographic. 

What made you want to come to UWE having already worked in the industry?

I got my first opportunity through a friend who brought me in on a project he was working on. 

I was made redundant due to covid, and decided to spend my time developing my skills to become a better animator. I wanted to come to UWE because its in such a great location to study animation. There are a lot of studios in Bristol, and the city itself is such a creative and inspiring place to be. 

How has UWE has helped you shape your career in animation?  

UWE has given me a lot more confidence in my work and myself, and helped me figure out what I wanted to do with my career. I’m now able to work towards that with the skills that I’ve learned during the course of my master’s. 

What would be your advice to current Animation students?  
It’s a lot of hard work and can take a while, but as long as you don’t give up you’ll get to where you want to be.  I’d use your time at UWE to learn everything you can and develop your skills to help in the future.
