UWE student Hoching Kwok’s animated short film ‘Prince Edward’ sweeping UK and international festival circuits

Third year Animation student Hoching Kwok’s animated short ‘Prince Edward’ has so far been selected to feature in multiple festivals, including Feel the Reel International Film Festival (Short Film – Animation nominee), Golden Short Film Festival (Golden Animated Short finalist), Mice, Taichung International Animation Festival, and Manchester Animation Festival.

Hoching said, ‘It’s such an honour for my film to be chosen for these festivals, and quite overwhelming – seeing it on the big screen is a completely different experience.’

The semi-abstract film is based on an episode of police brutality at the Prince Edward station during the 2019-2020 protests in Hong Kong, and examines the political unrest in Hong Kong through the eyes of a girl trapped within it.

‘The film is very poetic. When I first wanted to make the film, in 2019, I hadn’t done much for the cause but felt like I should do something for the place that I call home.

The ‘Ideas, Design, and Storytelling’ module from first year taught by Luis Cook really helped me to formulate a story from beginning to end. He helped me to clarify the story in my film so that it can be understood without needing so much context’

Luis said, ‘Hoching has produced a sophisticated, poetic and politically charged film. A personal and emotional response to a real-life event in Hong Kong. Beautiful and disturbing – it’s no surprise it’s been selected by so many film festivals.’
